Single Particle Imaging of Superfluid Helium Nanodroplets at SLAC FEL
Rico Tanyag (USC)

Helium nanodroplets can serve as a cryomatrix at sub 1 K temperature for diverse atomic and molecular clusters. Here we present preliminary results of the diffraction images obtained from single nanodroplets to characterize their shape.Surprisingly the droplets once thought to be spherical show abundance of anisotropic shapes. To further characterize the structure and excitations in the droplets, they were doped with Xe atoms. The doped clusters gave a rich and complex diffraction patterns that will be used to understand the dynamics of the nanodroplets, the presence of vortices in free superfluid droples and the structure of atomic and molecular clusters formed inside the droplets.
