Robert Hooke can be considered a British Leonardo: he was a virtuoso experimentalist who carried out experiments in all fields of science on a weekly basis at the Royal Society. He was also an artist and a deep thinker. This talk will describe and demonstrate Hooke's experiments and physical understanding of the mechanics of pendula and planetary orbits, which were carried out in part in collaboration with Isac Newton, but whose importance was never fully recognized largely due to conflicts between Hooke and Newton.
