Galactic Archeology in the Era of Mega Surveys
Matthias Steinmetz (AIP)

The LCDM cosmological concordance model is providing detailed predictions on the way how the Galaxy has been built up. Large spectroscopic and astrometric surveys are now capable to test these predictions and thus to test the validity of the LCDM paradigm on galactic scales. I will present science results obtained with two ongoing mega surveys of the Milky Way: the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), a survey with the goal of taking spectra for up to 1 million stars in the Milky Way, and the SEGUE component of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The results are compared with predictions of recent high resulution simulations of of the formation of disk galaxies in a cold dark matter universe.
