I will discuss whether the structure of galaxies is underlyingly uniform such that they can all be placed within a single, unifying picture or distinctly discrete such that different types can only be considered separately.
At the core of this discussion is the dimensionality of the parameter space
necessary to describe the bulk properties of galaxies. The goal
of such a discussion is to understand how many physical parameters
determine galactic structure and to unravel the roles of fate and fortune
in galaxy evolution.
