Development of the new optical cavity
Shuo Ma, Mentors David Weld and Toshihiko Shimasaki (Physics)

By exploiting the wave nature of light, optical resonant cavity is able to amplify the light with specific frequency. Due to capability of selecting the light of certain frequency, optical resonant cavity has been widely used for many scientific purposes such as laser system and scanning probe of light. However, because of the high cost of commercial optical cavity and the required stability under thermal fluctuation, it is desirable and also challenging to build a homemade optical cavity by using relative cheap material. In my presentation, I will show a confocal optical cavity design by using quartz tube and stainless steel. This cavity is stable under the temperature change and also costs around 600 dollars.
