Towards a brighter future: laser-based white lighting
Nicholas O'Dea, Mentors Ram Seshadri, Guillaume Lheureux, Clayton Cozzan (MRL)

The growth of LED's as white light sources has brought widespread energy savings. However, their efficiency drops as their output increases. Lasers don't suffer from this limitation and are thus better suited for high-flux applications, such as stadium lights or car headlights. My research is on ways of coupling lasers with phosphors, materials that can convert the color of incident light, to make an energy-efficient white light mixture.
