High-Pressure Physics and Planetary Interiors

Sufficiently high pressures can be achieved in the laboratory that the electronic states of matter are significantly altered, resulting in novel properties for materials. Pressures of this magnitude are reached inside planets, such that the evolution of planetary interiors is controlled by material properties unlike those found at ambient conditions. Future work, at near-stellar conditions, opens the possibility for studying entirely new phenomena in condensed-matter physics.
