I will recall in plain terms how string theory was born at the end of the
sixties out of attempts to understand the strong interaction. I will argue
that, with our present understanding of the latter, we can see how Nature
managed to deceive the theorists of the time leading them to discover a
(potentially) more far-reaching theory of all particles and interactions.
