What Aftershock and Recurrence Interval Statistics Tell Us About the Physics of Earthquakes
Dr. Donald Turcotte, UC Davis

Don Turcotte discussed a broad range of topics relating earthquakes to physics. He emphasized the statistical behavior of aftershocks. In particular he showed a universal empirical scaling law for aftershocks that could be derived from damage mechanics. He also considered inter event time statistics and argued that simulations and real data favored the Weibull (stretched exponential) distribution. He pointed out that this distribution may be a universal feature of complexity.
