Semiclassical Origins of Density Functional Theory
Kieron Burke (UC Irvine)

Modern density functional theory is an accurate theory for predicting various properties of molecules and solids. It evolved from Thomas-Fermi theory, which fails to capture important quantum effects. We explore the relationship between density functional theory and the semiclassical theory, and show how to derive potential functionals that incorporate quantum effects.
