The vortex Nernst signal in YBCO (oxygen content
y
= 6.95). In optimally- doped YBCO, the Nernst signal does NOT extend significantly above the Meissner transition
T
c (93 K). As in the case of LSCO below
T
c, the Nernst signal appears abruptly above the vortex lattice melting field
H
m (2.5 T at 86 K). The saturation of E_y at high fields in the vortex liquid state is not well-understood. With increasing T,
H
m moves to lower fields, approaching zero at 92 K. Within the narrow temperature range 94-98 K, however, the Nernst signal decreases below our resolution (2 nV/KT). Hence, the large Nernst `tail' extending to high temperatures in LSCO is absent in optimally doped YBCO. [Y. Wang, unpublished.]
